Meadowlark Crossbody Bag

Sale price$495.00

The first song of a Montana spring, painted in yellow and black, swinging free.

The western meadowlark is Montana’s state bird, and it’s usually the first thing I hear when the snow starts letting go. You’ll find it on a fence post, chest bright yellow, wearing its black V like a bandana. I wanted to carry that.

I start with black pebbled cow leather for the body. Then I paint the meadowlark across the fringe by hand: the yellow breast, the bold black V, and the streaked black-and-white flanks that run down to the tips. After the paint has cured, I cut the fringe strand by strand. The bird breaks apart when you walk and comes back together when you stand still. The side seams are whipstitched in yellow to tie it all together.

A single Swarovski crystal is set on the front pocket. It catches the light the way a meadowlark catches your eye from across a field.
